SEASONAL UPDATES TO MAKE YOUR BEDROOM FEEL COSY IN AUTUMN AND WINTER

This time last year we were a few weeks in to all three bedrooms existing in a continual six-month stint of DIY, swapping around who lives in which room, furniture lugging, plastering, painting… and an unplanned water leak thrown in for good measure. As is usually the case, I’d forgotten about the painful moments of it all until I found myself jumping up and down in the doorway of our bedroom this week, squawking about the light – “LOOK at the autumn glow… come quickly and see it – no, come now… its so beautiful!” All through the renovations I just kept repeating to myself “Think about the light we’ll have in our room!” and after a summer of pure white morning sunshine, I just realised that this is the first time we get to experience the beautiful soft toned glow in this room that accompanies an autumnal morning. The eternal quest for more light was one of the reasons why we opted for the colour palette that we did – to have something that both absorbed and reflected the varying seasonal sun and take on a different feel each time.

The photo above was taken on a sunny day last week just as the sun crept up and infused the room with late September warmth – stopping to appreciate those rare morning moments make this season feel like something to be celebrated instead of maligned. Plus, it’s always a bonus when a drop in temperature triggers my seasonal nesting instinct to kick in… its one of my favourite things about this time of year.

Here are a few of the changes I’ve been making in our bedroom to amp the level of cosy up that bit more and you can find the bedroom details shown above at the end of this post…

Layering up the bed with throws and blankets

We keep on using the same shade of bedding that we’ve used all through spring and summer – white or beige - and then come September, I layer throws and blankets. Over the years I’ve amassed a small neutral collection and love delving into them depending on the weather and mood, swapping them about with others around the house. Currently the Bedfolk linen & cotton throw is still on and I added a wool blend blanket in a cinnamon hue on top. As the winter sets in I’ll swap the linen throw for this heavier blanket.

Swap Cushion Covers For THOSE WITH A Seasonal Tone

A life long cushion obsession has meant the same when it comes to gathering covers in all the seasonal hues. From my stash, I can now mix and swap different inner pads borrowed from the living room and garden sofas to come up with a seasonally appropriate colour scheme on the bed. Having cushion pads in a variety of shapes helps and this year I stole the longer linen ones from the garden box and put these rusty orange ones on from H&M. The cushions and blankets together are a nod to autumn and winter colours without having to spend a fortune… besides you know about me and my aversion to too much colour.

Adding Autumn Scents & Accessories

Home fragrance evokes so many feelings and memories and now it seems my scenting obsession has passed over to H - this year she requested her own Autumn candle from The White Company! The minute this range comes into stock online it seems to sell like hot cakes so I stocked up with a few signature candles this time – if you want to indulge in the signature candle for the best seasonal £20 you’ll ever spend, don’t delay! My other favourite seasonal scent is St Eval Bay & Rosemary… for me it reminds me of the first time I discovered it years ago in a shop in Sherbourne and have been hooked ever since. It’s my Christmas prelude fragrance – it pretty much smells exactly like the Ralph Lauren Holiday candle (just arrived in stock BTW), so if you’ve ever sniffed that, you’ll know why I’m hooked! The diffuser lasts all winter and doesn’t lose it fragrance either.

By accessories, I mean swapping any foliage and faux stems in our room - its another really great way of echoing the time of year without making any major decor changes. Pampas grass glows in the autumn sunlight and the teasels that I foraged from the beach a couple of years ago add texture. In February this year, my soul sister friend who also has a passion for seasonal nesting tipped me off to The Suffolk Nest and I was blown away. Ashlee curates the most beautiful collection of faux and dried seasonal stems I’ve ever seen - they’re quite pricy but so worth the investment as with care, they last forever. I’ve learnt the best way to secure what you like from each of her seasonal launches is to sign up to the mailing list for details of when, put it in the calendar with an alert and then sit at your laptop as the countdown approaches. I did this for both the spring and autumn collections and in theory, only need to do it once more next summer – I can hear my wallet sighing in relief already!

Building A bedside Book Stack

Having a favourite stack of books and magazine down by my side of the bed is all the encouragement I need to switch off the TV, go up to bed early and hunker down for a read. I’m still working my way through the book pile I amassed throughout summer – you’ll find all my recommended reads here if you fancy adding a few titles to your hibernation collection this year. I always make sure there’s a few interiors books in the pile and some back copies of beautiful lifestyle magazines like Simply Scandi, Fieldfare and Kinfolk too. I don’t know why but these types of quality publications feel like such a treat and with their slow living, nature appreciative vibes, seem as synonymous with autumn as soup, pumpkins and cashmere.

On With The Winter PJ’s and All The Cosy Loungewear

And by that I mean on with it at approx. 6:30pm. There’s something about getting into what we’ve termed Slummies Chez Start, that provides the perfect underline and full stop to whatever’s come before in the day… now the evening can begin. By the time I reached midlife I decided that my Slummies should be anything but slummy – I’ve earned the right to loll about in cashmere, soft jersey and anything that envelops me within folds of comfort. If you’re looking to upgrade your slummies I can recommend The White Company for anything cashmere and the all manner of soft jersey in the loungewear sections at COS and ARKET.

So that’s me done… autumn is here and I’m ready to hibernate for the foreseeable future.

Wake me up in march!
