STARTING (AGAIN) WITH STYLE

If you’ve been following my blogging journey since the early days (we’re talking 2008) you’ll know that I started out writing predominantly about style. I was among the first flurry of forty something style bloggers and the resulting wave of enthusiasm for such a concept meant I was able to build a small business on the back of it.

Whilst I no longer stick to that sole subject, I’ve never lost the enduring love for the art of getting dressed - the moment of realisation that you’re pulling on an outfit that makes you feel relaxed and confident. It doesn't happen everyday so when I find inspiration lacking, all it usually takes is a spot of wardrobe experimentation, a scroll of my Saved style section on Instagram or a quick Pinterest search and I’m back in the game. I’m continually inspired by the style of the women I stalk follow on Instagram - they’re the ones I always look to when I fall into a sartorial slump.

It seems that with the advent of social media, Instagram in particular, style blogging as was seems to have all but evaporated. There are still a few bloggers out there paying as much attention to their websites as they do Instagram - I’m thinking of doing some digging and compiling a list of those you might like to check in with in a future post.

Whilst I love crafting rambling, thought driven posts these days, I’ve recently found myself missing the act of compiling style features too. I get a lot of messages via Instagram, generally from women in the same stage of life as me, saying that they miss the style posts too and some say that they lost their way somewhat after encountering midlife and then living through two years of perpetual pandemic lockdowns. Or sometimes it’s just the simple fact that they’ve evolved - they’re someone different now and want their style to reflect that. In either case I can wholeheartedly relate.

So this part of the blog, The Style Section, is a celebration of being a visible midlife woman - it’s about getting dressed every day and feeling great in this stage of life. Here you’ll find conversation about all the things I embrace within my own style, some outfit snaps, edits of year round basics, seasonal updates and sometimes, the pieces that win their way into my wardrobe because they just feel like they should have always been there.

You won’t find bright colours or crazy patterns as that’s just not me. You will find inspiration that will allow you to hone in on what makes you feel good, is practical enough to work for the everyday and the odd occasion when some subtle dress-up is required. My time of getting dressed up for the ‘Gram to emulate a whole host of other (usually younger) style bloggers is over. Now is the time for me to embrace who I am and reflect that sense of self in the clothes that I wear.

I hope that over time as I fill up this section with new style content, you’ll enjoy it and find plenty of inspiration as a visible midlife woman too!
